Mid-Year Disappointment? Hit the Mid-Year Reset Button

July 18, 20247 min read

Dr FAITH

I don’t know about you, but for me, July has been tough as I review my goals and realize I haven’t accomplished all I had intended to this point. I haven’t reached my income goals, I have had to overcome some barriers and challenges along the way, and am looking at hitting that reset button to re-energize myself for the remaining 5 months of the year.

Might you be feeling somewhat similar, experiencing discontent and dissatisfaction with the progress you have made so far?  Has the excitement with which you began the year faded, leaving behind frustration and self-doubt? I am writing this for you, and for me too…I want to encourage you to join me in hitting that button. How, you wonder?

Acknowledge and Assess

The first step in hitting the reset button is to acknowledge where you currently stand. This requires an honest assessment of your progress and a willingness to confront any shortcomings without judgment. Reflect on the goals you set at the beginning of the year and evaluate the progress made so far. Identify the factors that have contributed to your achievements and those that have hindered your progress.

Key Questions for Self-Assessment

  • What were your initial goals, and how have they evolved?

  • Which goals have you met, and which are still pending?

  • What obstacles have you encountered? How did you surmount them?

  • Are the goals still relevant and aligned with your current vision?

This self-assessment serves as a foundation for your reset strategy. It helps in understanding what worked, what didn’t, and why. Recognizing these aspects allows for informed decision-making as you move forward.

Revisit and Refine Goals

After assessing your progress, it’s essential to revisit and refine your goals. Goals should be dynamic and adaptable to changing circumstances. As a leader or entrepreneur, you must be agile and willing to pivot when necessary. The goals set at the beginning of the year might need adjustments to reflect new insights or market conditions. Goals need not be set in stone…

Renewed Focus and Prioritization

With refined goals in place, the next step is to renew your focus and prioritize your efforts. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the many tasks and responsibilities that come with leadership and entrepreneurship. Identify the most impactful activities that will drive you towards your goals.

Eisenhower Matrix

The Eisenhower Matrix is a powerful tool to help prioritize tasks based on their urgency and importance. Categorize tasks into four quadrants:

  1. Urgent and Important: Do these tasks immediately.

  2. Important but Not Urgent: Schedule time to focus on these tasks.

  3. Urgent but Not Important: Delegate these tasks if possible.

  4. Neither Urgent nor Important: Eliminate or minimize these tasks.

This matrix helps in managing time effectively and ensures that your efforts are directed towards high-impact activities. As I look at my own, I see the need to get help to handle some of the tasks, so that I can focus on those activities that only I can do.

Cultivate a Growth Mindset

A growth mindset is crucial for overcoming setbacks and achieving long-term success. Leaders and entrepreneurs who adopt a growth mindset view challenges as opportunities to learn and grow. They understand that failure is not a reflection of their abilities but a stepping-stone towards improvement.

Strategies to Cultivate a Growth Mindset

  • Embrace Challenges: See challenges as opportunities to develop new skills and knowledge.

  • Learn from Criticism: Use constructive feedback as a tool for growth.

  • Celebrate Effort, Not Just Results: Recognize and reward the effort put into pursuing goals, regardless of the outcome. Celebrate small wins…they add up.

  • Stay Curious: Continuously seek new knowledge and experiences.

By cultivating a growth mindset, you build resilience and maintain a positive outlook, even when facing difficulties.

Leverage the Power of Habits

Habits play a crucial role in achieving long-term goals. The mid-year reset is an excellent opportunity to establish or reinforce positive habits that support your objectives. Consistent daily actions, no matter how small, can lead to significant progress over time.

Building Effective Habits

  • Start Small: Begin with manageable tasks that can be easily integrated into your routine.

  • Be Consistent: Aim for consistency rather than perfection.

  • Track Progress: Use habit-tracking tools to monitor your daily actions.

  • Reward Yourself: Celebrate small wins to stay motivated.

By focusing on building effective habits, you create a sustainable path towards achieving your goals.

Harness the Power of Accountability

Accountability can significantly enhance your commitment to achieving your goals. Sharing your objectives with others and seeking regular feedback creates a sense of responsibility and urgency. I am glad I have friends who serve in this role, who are quick to ask me how am doing, where I am stuck, where I need help. I call them “friends with meddling rights”…they get to ask the tough questions, and they take no prisoners.

Accountability Strategies

  • Find an Accountability Partner: Partner with someone who shares similar goals or values.

  • Join a Mastermind Group: Engage with a group of like-minded individuals who provide support and accountability.

  • Regular Check-ins: Schedule regular meetings or check-ins to review progress and adjust strategies.

  • Public Commitment: Announce your goals publicly to create external accountability.

Leveraging accountability ensures that you stay on track and remain committed to your goals.

Invest in Continuous Learning

The business landscape is constantly evolving, and staying ahead requires a commitment to continuous learning. As a leader or entrepreneur, investing in personal and professional development is crucial for maintaining a competitive edge.

Continuous Learning Strategies

  • Attend Workshops and Conferences: Participate in industry events to gain new insights and network with peers.

  • Read Books and Articles: Stay informed about the latest trends and best practices in your field.

  • Take Online Courses: Enroll in courses to develop new skills or deepen existing ones.

  • Seek Mentorship: Learn from experienced mentors who can provide guidance and support.

Continuous learning not only enhances your skills but also keeps you motivated and inspired. As we speak, I have enrolled in an EI certification course, and already, I have learned a ton that is helping me reimagine the future of my coaching business.

Maintain a Balanced Life

Achieving your goals should not come at the expense of your well-being. It’s essential to maintain a balanced life that includes time for relaxation, hobbies, and personal relationships. A well-balanced life contributes to overall happiness and productivity.

Strategies for Maintaining Balance

  • Set Boundaries: Define clear boundaries between work and personal life.

  • Schedule Downtime: Allocate time for relaxation and activities that bring joy.

  • Practice Self-care: Prioritize physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

  • Stay Connected: Nurture relationships with family and friends.

Maintaining a balanced life ensures that you have the energy and focus needed to pursue your goals effectively. This past weekend, I got to hang out with one of those “friends with meddling rights”, as we visited her family out of town. Those few hours spent hanging out, dealing with a flat tire on our drive out, celebrating her father’s 85th birthday, it all added towards feeling more energized and refreshed. The wisdom shared by the elders doesn’t hurt either.

Embrace Adaptability

The ability to adapt to changing circumstances is a critical skill for leaders and entrepreneurs. The path to achieving goals is rarely linear, and being flexible allows you to navigate obstacles and seize new opportunities.

Strategies to Enhance Adaptability

  • Stay Open-minded: Be willing to consider new perspectives and ideas.

  • Be Proactive: Anticipate potential challenges and prepare contingency plans.

  • Learn from Experience: Reflect on past experiences to inform future decisions.

  • Stay Agile: Be ready to pivot and adjust strategies as needed.

Embracing adaptability ensures that you remain resilient and capable of achieving your goals, regardless of the challenges that arise.

Celebrate Milestones and Successes

Recognizing and celebrating milestones and successes, no matter how small, is vital for maintaining motivation and morale. Celebrations provide an opportunity to reflect on progress and appreciate the journey.

Ways to Celebrate Success

  • Acknowledge Achievements: Take time to acknowledge and appreciate your accomplishments.

  • Share Success: Celebrate with your team, peers, or loved ones.

  • Reward Yourself: Treat yourself to something special as a reward for your hard work.

  • Reflect and Plan: Use celebrations as a moment to reflect on what worked well and plan for future goals.

Celebrating successes keeps the momentum going and reinforces a positive attitude towards goal achievement.

Conclusion

The middle of the year is a perfect time for us leaders and entrepreneurs to hit the reset button and reignite our drive towards accomplishing our goals. By acknowledging progress, refining goals, renewing focus, cultivating a growth mindset, leveraging habits and accountability, investing in continuous learning, maintaining balance, embracing adaptability, and celebrating milestones, you can make the most of the remaining five months. It’s never too late to pursue your aspirations and achieve the success you envisioned at the beginning of the year. Let us embrace the mid-year reset with determination and optimism, let us encourage one another to do good work. In spite of the prevailing external circumstances and challenges, we can do this!
